Main Article WORLD Trade Center rescue and cleanup workers with post-9/11 cancer could still get far less compensation than responders with respiratory disease, a snub that may spur many to reject a new proposed settlement. The New York Post said those disabled by severe asthma may collect as much as $US1 million, but the estimated maximum payment for those with most tumour cancers is $US25,000, for lung and other respiratory cancers $100,000, and for blood cancers including leukemia $US320,000. "Millions for asthma? They can have my cancer and I'll take their breathing problems!" one worker said. For example, under a new deal reached last week, Ground Zero ironworker Brad Bonaparte, 48, suffering from advanced esophageal cancer, could get just $US18,750 to $US25,000. "It doesn't make sense for him to take it, it's so little money," said his lawyer, Greg Cannata. Asthma sufferer Waldemar Balcer, 58, meanwhile, would get close to $US175,000. Mr Cannata said he will advise his client to wait for a pending bill to reopen the federal 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, with more than $US5 billion for sick workers and others. Under the terms of last week's settlement deal, the people most sickened by toxic dust from the September 11 terror attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center "will receive the majority of the increased payments." The deal requires that at least 95 per cent of plaintiffs agree to opt in by September 30, following a public hearing on July 23.
